Period Problems

Such a wonderful show! A week later, I am still talking about it with friends and singing some of the songs. The show was not only very funny and clever, but also quite important. Lita addresses experiences that impact half the population, sharing her personal encounters with misogyny within the medical system, as well as how this same misogyny influences research and treatment related to periods and endometriosis—an area that’s still grossly underdeveloped to the detriment of thousands (probably a lot more) of people. The use of the projector and the music enhanced the overall experience. I was truly impressed by the creativity involved in the projection work. 10/10, I would highly recommend it.

Fantastic ! Heartfelt storytelling centring around the struggles that many women have with the phases of the menstrual cycle. Lita’s perfomance is sincere, funny and heartfelt.The show is enhanced by fabulous costumes, puppets and visual storytelling by Christina Hamer..

This was so good! She soooooooo relatable. It's funny. It's relevant. There's so much good real information in it. And the person doing the projectors was incredible. The different way they used the medium was great. Highly recommend

Period problems is a one woman musical parody that dives into the difficulties of navigating women's health in a patriarchal society. Lita Pater is able to bring humour and understanding to the frustrations of living a chronically ill life, and she does so in such a creative way. She represents these struggles through visuals, storytelling and of course song. Parodies like Shania Twain's classic line, “man, I feel like a woman” becoming “man, I’m feeling kinda menstrual" makes for a hilariously relatable show. The most standout part of this show is the use of an overhead projector to create the background visuals. Placing designer Christina Hamer at the front of the stage to swap out different pictures and cutouts added a certain charm to the show that you don't see very often. Even throughout all the humor of the production, she is able to directly address real facts and data to reinforce her show. Overall, Lita turns education and feminism into lighthearted storytelling with beautiful visuals and catchy parodies that will be stuck in your head for days. Whether you have a uterus or not, this is a must see show!

Funny and informative! It's where art meets science. The actor and support tech combine to create a visually engaging experience that is the backdrop to witty, funny but true dialogue of the hormone cycle. Highly recommend!!

Wonderful blend of witty, hilarious and educational. I thoroughly enjoyed myself as it was relatable and rooted in the performer's true story. Super shout out to the guys brave enough to attend! Don't worry the artist shows the guys some empathy. The multi-media approach added to the show. Go check it out! Lots of street parking by the venue and the Fringe guide doesn't say but the do sell some snacks and nonalcoholic drinks.

Christina’s visuals add playful bursts of creativity, making the show dynamic and fun to watch. It’s funny, uplifting, and full of heart, a celebration of resilience and honesty that will leave you smiling.

The show is a combination of a deeply personal and heartfelt journey through the Alberta medical system and the broader issue of the patriarchy and "women's health".

I found myself enjoying the show as I clapped, laughed and sang along. There is a sharp detour to a heartfelt and intimate moment of reflection on the artist's struggle to get a diagnosis and find treatment. I found myself, and noted others in the audience, tearing up as the performer lays her emotions bare on the stage. This turn may be jarring to some, but the performer does an admirable job bringing the audience back to the light-hearted and edutainment performance I enjoyed at the start.

I think the unsung hero of the show is the visual gags and projected art that accompanies the performance. The projectionist does not simply sit idly by, but is a key contributor to the performance. I think the projectionist accidently stole the show on my viewing, with having a laugh out loud moment that many may miss. I cannot stress this enough, the live art elevates this show from being good to excellent.

Though this show title may scare many people away, specifically those without a uterus, I believe this show does a good job in making the subject approachable and safe for someone coming from someone who lacks the experience outlined in the title.

As I sit here, a woman who gets her period, I reflect on this show in disbelief... I've had my period for 20 years! How am I only learning some of the things I learned in this show NOW?!

Lita wrote something approachable, joyful, honest, and grounding. This show was really exciting not just because of the live projection art (WOAH!) but because every single person in the room learned something new and, frankly, vital about having a uterus, whether that applied to you or not. It was funny, it moved quickly, and it was well worth the ticket!

Period problems consisted of hilarious song and dances with witty lyrics, relatable stories that make you laugh and also emotional anecdotes of Lita’s struggles. Similar to a menstrual cycle this show will make you laugh, cry, inform and question society. To add to Lita’s performance, Christina adds some unique and sometimes humorous visuals to the performance. A must see for all people who have a period but if you don’t that’s okay because you will definitely learn something new and laugh along the way!

If you’ve ever had a period or know anyone who’s ever had a period, this show is a must see. Poignant, funny, informative, and at times, heartbreaking. Lita brings a special brand of humour to this touchy subject and Christina is a masterful visual storyteller. Period.
