Tita Jokes
After years on tour, The Titas are bringing their award-winning sketch comedy show to Edmonton Fringe! Tita Jokes is a musical comedy about our Filipina elders, our Titas. A love letter to our mothers, sisters, Lolas, and friends, this sketch comedy show explores Filipina heartache and resiliency and how we cope through song.
Tita Jokes is a brilliantly executed blend of musical and sketch comedy that celebrates Filipino culture with sharp humour and first‑class performances. Every minute is a delight; witty writing, energetic staging, and standout singing and acting keep the pace lively and the laughs coming. This Fringe hidden gem is thoroughly entertaining; audiences will leave wanting more.
Tita Jokes, from the top of its show, establishes itself as an Edmonton fringe “must-see’. combining musical sketch comedy with the everyday antics of filipinos, Tita Jokes creates a show that is deeply rooted in Filipino culture and humor whist still being accessible to everyone, even if you are not familiar with the term ‘Tita’ the show makes sure that every joke and detail lands with its audience
From the top of the show the so called “Tita Collective” brings an incredible amount of energy to the stage, this energy is completely embodied through all their choreography, acting and vocals. Their pure enthusiasm and drive is gripping the audiences, making it difficult not to have a good time, at certain points it felt less like a rehearsed performance, and more like a group of friends riffing around. That pure chemistry between performers is one of Tita Jokes’ largest successes.
The show also features a pleasant variety in a lot of its sketches, the different scenes constantly shifted in duration, subject matter and style, successfully keeping the audience engaged throughout the show, however towards the climax of the show it felt as thought the performers were running out of material to riff about, the later sketches did not have the same spontaneous fun as the previous ones did.
Overall, Tita Jokes is an energetic and welcoming production that proves cultural comedy does not have to be exclusive.
The cast members of Tita Jokes are incredibly talented. I felt that they infused Filipino humour into the show very seamlessly and captured life in the Filipinx diaspora in a way that is accessible to non-Filipinos. I do wish that this show had a bit more of a cohesive storyline, though I do realize this show was intentionally made to be a bunch of sketches stitched together. I'm glad to have seen it.
The Tita Collective hosts a hilarious, sketch/musical evening - I had the BEST time!! Amazing playlist and song choices, the choreo is so good and the mics are on <3 Each member gets their time to shine, and as an ensemble, I really felt that they support and take care of each other and the audience. I laughed so much, and they are so talented. I want to see this show again and again!
