On my way to the venue, I was worried that I had forgotten to take my ADHD medication that morning and wouldn’t be able to focus properly on the performance. With what felt like dopamine mainlined to my heart, I quickly learned that this wasn’t going to be a problem at The Human Cat Experience.

This cartoonish show is purr-fectly stupid: they successfully combine the chromatic vibes of Adventure Time with the gritty chaos of Ren & Stimpy (and just a dash of Cheech & Chong). These slacker kitties take a wonderfully weird lo-fi adventure to “Cat-sco” only to get sidetracked by outside forces - like water, or even the odd interdimensional being.

The show is staged using slapdash cardboard props; and though many of their them fell apart and failed in real time, this was no roadblock for the clownishly unflappable duo. Despite their shitty-on-purpose aesthetic, they manage to fly through their story by the seat of their pants and by trusting their unique brand of manic magic.

In the eyes of the cats, mistakes are not a problem, but rather: an opportunity. I think we can all learn a little something from their unflappability. The preshow announcement gives the audience permission to make noise, meow in response to their prompts and relax into your own inner cat experience.

So grab one of their laser pointers, turn off your brain, take in an eyeful of cat butt and enjoy this veritable scratching post for playful adults.
