Couch Surfing Improv are a group of very technically proficient improvisers bringing the best combination of silly, wacky, and fun longform to Edmonton. They’ve been on my list for a long time and I’m so glad I saw them. Their physical comedy and relatable premises were so fun to watch the whole time! See it all the time because it’s improv and it will always be different!
Woo! But in a Minor Key!
Just about the simplest a stage can be, a single couch and small gaggle of improvisers, this show was a creative mix of a diverse troop and minimal cues and props. All 5 of the actors were very distinct in their own characters and personalities, whoever the improvisers may have benefitted more from the use of an external technical team in order to elevate the show and add layering to the performance.
Though the actors were strong individually, it tended towards awkwardness at time, as well as interrupting one another.
However, I found they utilized the space masterfully and creatively, as well, the lighting shifting to fit the mood in the scenes gave the actors organic transitions. All together, this show was a great insight into the barebones and artistry in improv.
FUNNY AF!! Such a solid team that had me laughing the whole time. They are so comfortable with each other, they were having fun on stage, and the audience was having fun with them!! Make sure you make room for a little couch surfing in your schedule!
Long form improv that brought on suggestions from the audience! These folks brought fun and personality to a couch with silly stories, funny characters and a chemistry between actors that felt truly genuine! Would see again
Some laughs, went with a buy one get one friend at a discount. Still feels like this show should have been 30 minutes shorter. The premise of couch surfing just doesn't feel like it should be an hour long, not enough time to reset with more audience suggestion.
One of the weakest improv shows i’ve seen. The actors did a poor job setting up scenes and their jokes fell flat especially with their delivery it felt so … one dimensional. Would it be silly to say it made too much sense that it wasn’t funny? They would also tap people out of scenes sometimes but not all the time it felt even more confusing because again there was no context given, especially when they would sing to change scenes and go back to old scenes out of nowhere????? Also the only suggestions they got from the crowd was at the beginning and three prompts only which was poorly used. I honestly spent most of the time confused and unimpressed by the jokes. They weren’t quick on their feet and they had pauses in between speaking which made everything feel slow. Also poor use of the couch prop and honestly any props they had. I’m not gonna sit here and say I didn’t laugh at ANY jokes but with this being my first impression of this show I would not recommend.
Awesomely in sync performers delivering funny and committed shows. Her physicality as a caterpillar! Worth the price of admission.
