Dip Happens

Cold Water Swimming on Haida Gwaii

A non-athletic 63-year-old teacher who can barely swim joins a triathlon team. There are no pools on Haida Gwaii. She goes from daily dips to swimming in rivers, lakes, or ocean. The benefits are worth the cold.

Charming, funny, and inspiring! Josina is a wonderful storyteller, I felt so enthralled the whole show :) I loved the sound effects and the way she described nature- I closed my eyes and suddenly I was floating in the Tlell River 🏊🏻‍♀️🪼🦀🌊.

I’ve been reluctant to swim for a while, but I’m so excited to get back in the water now 🤿🦑

Inspiring story and passionate storytelling. For anyone who wants to pursue their passions as a senior but prevents doing so because you wrongly believe you first need talent or skill...

Josina’s storytelling prowess shines through as she takes the audience through her journey of reluctant swimmer to triathlete. I loved all the imagery of nature and how we find connections within ourselves.

This is a personal story of deciding to do A Thing and then actually doing it just because that’s what she decided to do—very relatable to me! While I’d have liked to hear a bit more detail about what led Josina to commit to daily swims in particular, her show is a delight with lots of funny quips to keep audiences engaged. I also appreciated her use of printed “scene title cards” (for lack of a better term) to help spectators stay grounded in each topic, I found them quite helpful for neurodivergent reasons. As I approach my 50s, I’m starting to better understand the experiences of people who make big later-in-life changes, and Josina’s story is inspiring in that way even if cold-water swimming isn’t likely to be my own choice. But if she can do it, surely I could too, right? Bottom line: I’m very glad I attended!

Delightful, insightful, and bigfun. Especially because also I’m familiar with the waters of Haida Gwaii, and the challenges associated.
