Emo Majok: African Aussie

Award-winning South-Sudanese-Aussie comedian and Australia's Got Talent Finalist, Emo Majok, returns to Edmonton. With his "Best of Fest" show, he digs into experiences of culture-clashes, with side-splitting stories of adjusting from a refugee camp in East Africa to travelling the world and spreading laughter.

See It Again

Emo is a delight and a solid entertainer. Using humour to share his story that in itself is rich with struggles embues him with strength, courage, and relatability. You immediately trust him, respect him, and want to hear more. His stage presence is bold, yet friendly - I could have listened to him share stories for hours. He engages the audience, builds rapport, and covers a great range of topics - from family to politics - while keeping the jokes clean and hilarious. I would absolutely see him perform again if given the opportunity.

Emo was hilarious from start to finish, he expertly navigated the room and made everyone feel comfortable but also addressed some of the political/social/cultural differences that do make us different in an respectful and engaging manner. Stories are heartfelt, comedy is pinpoint, timing is impeccable. Take your s/o and tell your friends, hope to see this guy again.

This was my first show ever at The Spotlight. For a festival that often crams audiences into back storage rooms and all types of makeshift theatre nooks, this venue turned out to be a refreshing change of pace. Being in a functioning restaurant has its perks, and the audience seemed to delight in having access to nibbles and sips before our funnyman took the stage.

Emo – an immigrant to Australia with a South Sudanese background - took us all on a solid hour of standup, tracing his journey to the stage from very humble beginnings. Performing for a majority-white audience, he made good fodder out of our cultural/racial differences. His material also covered colonialism, his time as a finalist on Australia’s Got Talent, his last Canadian comedy stint (Just For Laughs), the odd nature of jobs and the pitfalls of raising a family when touring for a living.

As a single Queer theatregoer, I don’t think I was the target audience for his type of comedy. The material was 100% heteronormative, but I still managed to enjoy myself as I sipped my ginger beer in the dark.

If you need a good laugh (or even respite from jugglers, actors and burlesque performers), take a chance on Emo Majok at The Spotlight Cabaret.

(Just be prepared for some crowd work/ or questions from the stage. Emo took keen interest in many a table at my performance...)

Emo majok: African Aussie was anything but unseasoned.

From the second Emo Majok walked on stage, the energy in the room totally shifted. He had such a captivating stage presence, and somehow made every single person in the audience feel like part of the show. His crowd work was smooth, quick and witty. Like he had a comeback ready before people even finished talking. Every single interaction had people crying with laughter.

The crowd was laughing at pretty much every sentence. Some of the jokes came back around in the smartest, funniest ways, which made the whole set feel incredibly thought-out without losing its natural effortless flow. Even when telling stories from his life he's able to discuss serious topics while being able to keep them lighthearted and fun to listen to.

The whole set was non-stop laughs from beginning to end. By the time it was over, my face hurt from smiling, and the crowd was still buzzing. Emo Majok knows exactly how to own a stage and keep everyone locked in. If you ever get the chance to see him live, take it. He’s something special.
