Hysteria's House
This show was so wonderful! Funny, spooky, and political by turns. There was never a moment where I felt mentally unengaged or sensed time dragging. The actor did a phenomenal job and had impeccable comedic timing as well as controlling audience participation with humor and a reasonable pace, which is tough for any performer. The premise, while seemingly well-trodden, had so many moments that surprised and delighted me that I came away feeling that the work was quite original and creative. I really hope this play can be staged again for longer/in a larger space so more people can see it!
I also want to shout out the ASL interpreter for adding a lot of humor to the show acting side by side with the main actor. It was also through her work that we were able to experience one hilarious audience member's banter with the main actor. As a hearing person, ASL interpretation generally tends to have a net neutral affect on my experience of a show, as frankly interpretation tends to happen off to the side and, at least in my experience, shows with audience participation elements basically never get ASL interpreted. This was the first time I experienced Deaf/HoH audience participation because of ASL interpretation being front row and center and it actually made me mad that more shows with audience participation elements are not employing ASL interpreters!
