Men Love Horsies: The Musical

I liked the flow and that the songs had different vibes to them. It was fun watching him interact with audience members, and there was even a sing-a-long! It really is just a guy singing about horses, and it's delightful.

It’s just a man. Singing songs. About horses. And honestly? Neigh-sayers be damned, I loved every minute of it.

There is only one man, his unshakable conviction that horses are extremely worth singing about, and roughly an hour of your life that you will never get back but also will not want back. It’s the kind of show that shouldn’t work on paper and yet fully gallops away with it.

I came in skeptical and left wanting to trade in my car for a horse. In fact — I have to drive back home after this and I’m seriously considering just getting a horse instead.

Go see this. Bring a friend. Maybe bring a horse.

I ended my Saturday Fringe Binge in an ideal way seeing Devin Bateson’s Men Love Horsies: The Musical– a long lost sibling show to Jessie Walker’s Horse Girls from a couple Fringes ago. One of my favourite things about Canadian musical theatre is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and this silly, random little gem of a Fringe show is exactly the delightful ridiculousness that you can get when you let your imagination run like a Sable Island horse and don’t feel too precious about it.

Devin Bateson plays all the parts in this musical, and creates a whole world for us anchored by one cowboy who loves horses so much he just has to sing about them. He also wants to bring them into as close proximity to himself as possible (but not in a weird way, unless horses playing basketball is weird, in which case, okay maybe a bit weird). He dreams of a better world where horses dominate the streets, and they are involved in human’s day to day lives, and wishing appears to make it so. But, out of this slower paced community where horse lanes and bike lanes exist side by side comes an evil villain, who Bateson writes in Grinch-like terms, and who seeks to destroy all the horses and replace them with a vile environmental disaster contraption. He is the Bo Burnam of Horses and I couldn't be more delighted that I got to see this GEM of a show!!

I can't say enough positive about this high energy show.. This man knows how to entertain and plays with the audience. We delighted in laughing and playing back .

He brought out the inner child in all of us.. one of the shortest hours I've had in a long time. Go !!
