RIOT!
Whose side are you on? New York City. 1849. A time when theatre meant so much to people, they would KILL for it! Based on the incredible TRUE STORY of the deadliest theatre riot of all time: the National Guard, cannons, fires, kilts, angry mobs, over 30 deaths, and a bloody sheep carcass.
Riot at Camp Saint Jean Auditorium delivers a compelling retelling of the Astor Place Riot of May 10, 1849, brought to life through the thoughtful adaptation by Jeff and Ryan Gladstone. The production resurrects the legendary rivalry between Edwin Forrest and William Charles Macready, two titans of Shakespearean theatre, whose clashing styles and national pride ignited one of the most dramatic moments in American cultural history. The performances are sharp and captivating, drawing the audience into the tension and nuance of this historical feud. With professional staging and a clear passion for the material, the show succeeds in making a complex chapter of history both accessible and riveting. If you're a history enthusiast—or simply love a good theatrical showdown—this is a must-see.
Wow! A deadly riot caused by ... live theatre! In a riotous new show from Monster Theatre.... Check out the full 12thnight Fringe review!
Somehow really tight while still feeling loose. Very funny, fantastic and highly energetic performances, plenty of physical comedy. I wish the end was a liiitle bit longer, but I’m also biased towards seriousness and I love to see a comedy that goes earnest. I think this show had the ideal level of audience participation that keeps it fun for everyone without anyone having to remember complicated instructions or give boring answers. Just excellent.
This play isn't about them!
A masterfully crafted and acted 2 man show, Ryan and Jeff Gladstone do incredibly well at bouncing between characters of all sorts, and returning to being themselves all at once. A chaotic, frenetic energy from the outset, hilarious jokes, guffaw worthy sight gags, cannons, and sheep, oh my! This show was truly worthy of my partial standing ovation! Do yourself a favor and go see this historical play turned sibling rivalry!
Curtains, Cannons, and Chaos
If you’re in the need for a theatrical experience that blends uproarious laughter with a touch of historical chaos then this show is exactly your cup of tea. Imagine this: two talented actors skillfully weaving together a tale of time that takes you back to New York City in 1849 where theatregoers were so passionate that they would literally kill for a good show.
As soon as the lights began to dim, right away struck chaos! Right off the bat this duo had the audience doubling over from laughter with their antics and comedic timing. They tackled the tension of a moment with witty quips and captivating storytelling that kept the audience engaged, while dropping off a few jokes that remind us how ridiculous history can be. The engagement with the audience was another thing, almost like when a magician asks for a volunteer, the audience was part of the performance.
Overall the show is captivating and hilariously chaotic with a messy stage and heartfelt ending. If you’re in the mood for a touch of absurdity and a bit of a humorous history lesson then this should be on your watch list. Just keep your eyes peeled for any rogue sheep!
