The Divorced Dad's Guide to Slaying Vampires

From the playwright that brought you "Musical for the Endtimes" and the director of "Sweet Jesus: The Gospel According to Felt." A punchy new comedy about fatherhood (and fighting vampires). Kevin, a recently divorced Dad, must fight to free St. Albert from Dracula's fascist regime.

Laughed So Hard I Cried

The Divorced Dads Guide to Slaying Vampires is a laugh-out-loud, action-packed ride, from the second the cast steps on stage, till the final bow. Set hilariously close to home in St. Albert, it blends absurd vampire chaos with everyday dad relatability in the best possible way.

The fight scenes are impressively choreographed, full of energy and perfect comedic timing. Every song, line, and lighting cue hits exactly where it should. This cast dives so deeply into their roles that even in the most absurd scenes it feels believable. This show on brotherhood, friendship, and fatherhood is a surprisingly heartwarming story considering the absolutely wild plot of this show. Filled with utter creativity and very clear dedication, I never wanted this show to end.

What really makes this show stand out is how it somehow manages to be both extremely clever and completely off the rails in all the best ways. No matter how ridiculous it gets it never feels messy. It’s smart, silly, and seriously funny. This is the kind of show you want to tell all your friends about as soon as it’s over. If you’re looking for something that’s high energy, well executed, and just genuienly fun, this is definitely a Fringe highlight.

Not My Cup of Tea

This show has a lot of heart.

We don't often get a lot of media about how much divorced dads love their kids, and this one has some great storytelling around that.

Ultimately, though, I didn't love it.

There were some interesting ideas and individual scenes were interesting. The performer playing Dracula delivered his lines impeccably.

But much of the play felt like characters on stage speaking exposition at each other. There was a lot to get through, and a lot of the times the characters getting through it were shouting –– it got a little tiring.

The show was set in St. Albert, and landmarks from the city were inserted in and played for laughs, but ultimately none of the characters were really "St. Albertan" and the setting didn't have much effect other than for wink-and-nod references. Any other location could have been swapped in without any effect on the storytelling or characters.

There's a lot of potential in this show, and you can tell the entire cast is having fun with it and giving it their all.

It just feels a little underbaked.

Dracula is here to take over the city! This show was expertly cast with the characters each bringing to life the show from the stereotypical Brad to the Count himself. Throughout the show Kevin's past is expertly demonstrated in clear flashbacks and they deliver humor throughout. Forever a fan of Unkempt Muskrats!

See It Again

The cast is tight, the music is fast, the blood is minimal but realistic, the vampires are legitimately alarming, the dads are learning, the kids are bratty and charming, the fight scenes are in slow motion, and the running gags are flawless. It runs a tad over the 60 minutes, but you're not checking your watch. You're on the edge of your seat. I've seen it twice now, and you should definitely come for the fun, but you'll stay for this show's big heart. Don't miss it.

I brought my very own divorced dad to see this show with me, and I'm not sure either of us knew what to expect, and yet somehow it definitely exceeded those expectations.

This is probably the most ambitious show I've seen at Fringe this year in terms of the cast size, costuming, props, lighting, sound... And everybody involved absolutely crushed it.

The cast's comedic timing was amazing, and the chemistry they had together made the relationships believable and added some heart and depth to what would otherwise be a very goofy show. The soundtrack was killer, and gave the show a very Scott Pilgrim-esque vibe.

If you're a fan of punk music, you're into nerd culture, have a divorced dad or are one yourself, or you're looking for something that's unlike anything else you'll see at the festival this year, see this show. You won't regret it.

See It Again

A story that captured me from the moment the show began and phenomenal characters, each with their own explored depth. Even before the show had officially began, I had the pleasure of witnessing an actor interact with the audience while in fully in character, adding an extra layer to the experience. I was genuinely invested in seeing where things would take these characters, and it was exciting to see aspects that could be related to within their arcs. The casting was excellent, and every time Dracula showed up on stage, I could not stop thinking “DUDE THIS GUY IS SO COOL”

Laughed So Hard I Cried

The ultra-charismatic Randy Brososky is the titular head undead with designs on taking over the world... starting with St. Albert. To defeat the uprising of the damned, punk, LARPing, alcoholic depression, and parenting all come together. Will it all be enough?

Lots of laughs, plenty of Easter eggs for St. Albert kids of a certain era (The Blind Pig!), even some pretty remarkable stunt work! If you like Buffy, you're in the target demo and you'll have a great time.

Cruelly clawing back one star only because the three cast members that make up the band — Brad, Kevin, and... um... Bass Player😉 — are all a little too visually similar. It makes sense; former punk rocker divorced dads have a "look," to be sure. But this made the relationships between the dads and the kids a little difficult to parse out amidst all the punk rock, occult rituals, and staking. Several of those relationships revolve around a character that is mentioned but never appears. That moment you're thinking, "Wait, who's Alison again?" can take you out of the action for a sec. I figure her physical absence from the titular dad's life is kinda the point, but having her show up in a scene with the other kids might have helped establish her significance.

Nitpicks aside, this show is one of the most fun hours you'll have at the Fringe this year!

Laughed So Hard I Cried

Honestly the best fringe show I’ve seen this year. Top quality acting, writing, humor & wit.

Not only is it funny but it’s also charming, engaging, and feels like you’re in a movie.

I’d definitely go see it again, maybe even a few times.

See It Again

A fun filled, high energy tale full of great humor, great talent and great local (St. Albert) references. A high octane cast that works hard to keep it tight and ensured it's enjoyed by all. A shout out to the writer, and all of the talented performers !

See It Again

This team took on a highly ambitious project, and truly nailed it.

From the very first introduction to characters in the band, I was hooked and remained fully engaged throughout the performance. Each cast member successfully brought distinct and memorable characters to life, allowing the dynamics between them to truly flourish. Randy Brososky delivers a stand out performance as the Vampire figurehead.

This show makes you genuinely care for the characters and the struggles they face in their lives and for some that means saving an entire town or a loved one from Vampires. It will definately make you laugh—and might move you to some tears.

Highly recommended.
