See It Again

Gripping yet never exploitative, sincere while also surprisingly humorous, Adam Bailey’s “Afeni” is one of the most compelling new solo plays to debut at the Fringe in recent years. Based on true events, it recounts the story of Afeni Shakur, the Black Panther revolutionary who was arrested on unfounded, politically motivated charges and proceeded to successfully defend herself in court.

Familiar to Toronto Fringe audiences for several contemporary comedies, Justin Hay is also a fine Shakespearean actor. He showcases that beautifully in this poignant solo show about a middle-aged actor who draws on the Bard’s words to help him deal with the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune: the death of a bullying father, the breakup of a marriage, medical crises.

Not My Cup of Tea

Transplanting Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to roaring 1920s Chicago and turning it into a musical featuring American standards with new lyrics sounds promising. But much of Natalie Kaye’s adaptation — which features speakeasies, boxing rings and mysterious flasks of moonshine — feels nonsensical.
