How to Write a Meaningful Theatre Review

Whether you're a first-time Fringer, an emerging reviewer learning the ropes, or a seasoned pro - thank you for sharing your voice.

Your review helps connect audiences to shows they'll love. Reviews are one of the most powerful tools to help build audiences. A thoughtful review helps curious Fringers decide what to see by offering a glimpse into the experience - what to expect, what stood out, and why it might resonate.

When you share your experience, you're supporting individual shows AND helping sustain the Fringe movement by championing the bold, independent spirit that makes this Festival thrive.

Before you hit “submit,” keep these tips in mind:

Be Specific

Instead of saying “It was great” or “I didn't like it,” tell us why.

Try:

Be Kind. Be Honest

Constructive doesn't mean sugar-coated. It means fair, thoughtful, and respectful.

Ask yourself:

Remember: Artists are real people. Many are sharing new work for the very first time. Treat their work the way you'd want yours to be treated.

Focus on the Art

Keep your review about the show, not the Artist's identity, appearance, or personal life. If it's not about the performance, leave it out.

No Spoilers

Please don't ruin the twist! Instead, talk about tone, energy, or themes to help readers decide if it's their kind of show.

Star Ratings & Reactions

You've got options! Every review can include a star rating and/or a reaction to help a reader quickly get a sense of the show.

Star Ratings (1 to 5 stars)

Pro Tip: A lower star rating doesn't mean a show wasn't "good." It might simply mean it wasn't your vibe - and that's totally okay. Just explain why in your review so others can decide for themselves.

Reactions

Reactions are a fun, fast way to share how a show made you feel!

Keep It Clean

You can be clever without cussing. If you wouldn't say it in front of your grandma (or a grade school class), leave it out.

Keep It Clippy

Bite-sized review that offer a quick read are best - especially for busy Fringers trying to plan their day. Think 3-5 sentences that pack a punch.

Stand By Your Words

You are part of a shared community of dialogue. Sign your review, own your thoughts, and remember: your words matter.

Celebrate the Fringe Spirit

Fringe is about taking risks, lifting each other up, and making magic—onstage and off. Your review can help an artist find their next audience, and maybe even their next opportunity.
