Killed to Death

This quirky murder-mystery is a love letter to the genre. Inspired by "Death by Design" by Rob Urbinati with tributes to "Clue" and "Murder by Death" this rollercoaster ride incorporates a new twist, what if a traditional murder-mystery...was also a soap opera!?

It was fine. I ended up checking the time a lot. The murder happening 40min into a 60min show felt way too late, especially given how slow the start was. Nothing in this really wowed me, except that they had live accompaniment. All of it (performances, stage, writing) was just ok. I think plays are rarely served by having the playwright direct the show.

See It Again

I came to this show fresh off one with heavier material and I was looking for a pick me up, and this absolutely delivered! If you like quirky murder mysteries crossed with a soap opera that has live piano accompaniment (who absolutely made several scenes with the music!) and will keep you both laughing and guessing as to who the killer is, this is a show for you! All the actors are perfectly cast, and there a few twists to the plot that made our audience gasp.

Killed to Death delivers a delightfully twisted take on the classic whodunit murder mystery. The cast shines in their roles, bringing both intrigue and levity to the unfolding plot. A live piano accompaniment adds a clever layer of drama and comedic flair, enriching the overall atmosphere. However, a moment where an actress broke character to silence the pianist felt jarring and could have been handled with more finesse. Despite that hiccup, the show remains a thoroughly entertaining experience—witty, well-paced, and full of surprises. Definitely worth checking out!

Laughed So Hard I Cried

The frenetics of an improv show in a scripted story. A wonderful cast of actors breathed life into a meticulously mined script. I counted references to numerous stories including Clue, Murder by Death, and Soap, not to mention more than a few made for tv movies. These actors gave it all and elevated a tight script. I was a bit nervous with all the different reviews but glad I trusted my instincts and went. I wish I could give 6 stars!

If you like soap operas this is your show. It had over the top acting, love triangles, and lots of drama, however it was a bit slow at points and when one of the actors broke the fourth wall to tell the pianist to stop playing it was done in a way that was uncomfortable...

Killed to Death gives you exactly what it says it will: a murder mystery turned soap opera, from over the top characters and their messy love lives to monologues about the murder this show is quite the ride. The show may start off a bit slow but once they get into the action it's smooth sailing from there. I will say that the lights were quite bright at points (I put on sunglasses) and the piano (whilst wonderfully thematic) did overshadow the actors on occasion. In conjunction with putting on sunglasses I wore loop engage earplugs and used an infinity cube. Special shoutout to Alexandra Lepage as Aspen who is absolutely hilarious and Grace Jenkins for her amazing reenactment! If you like soap operas and murder mysteries (and don’t mind a bit of a longer set up) you should definitely check out Killed to Death as you’ll never guess who the murder is with so many wannabe murderers running around.

Laughed So Hard I Cried

Imagine a who done it that’s part Clue and part female Inspector Clouseau. The story is a 70s Hollywood murder mystery. The cast is fresh, the dialogue sharp, the humour and clever word play had me giggling the entire time.

If you need a laugh after a heavy show, or are a fan of comedy and great acting, I highly recommend this quirky play.

I’ll for sure see it again because I’ve no doubt missed some clever twist of phrase.

Laughed So Hard I Cried

Killed To Death written and directed by Megan Holt is a hilarious ode to the murder mystery genre for fans for Clue and The Play That Goes Wrong. The show which is produced by Sutton Theater Company is about a Hollywood couple whose soap opera begins to tank, causing them to flee to the countryside where old friends - and foes come to visit, bringing past events to light. But when one of their guests ends up dead it is up to them to figure out whodunnit. The actors in the show were outstanding in their roles, their energy staying consistent throughout the entirety of their performances. The use of physical comedy throughout the show ensured that there was not one part of the stage going unused. Something to highlight from this production is the costumes. I thought they were such great choices for each character and helped further develop them and their personas. The live piano accompaniment enhanced the dramatic comical atmosphere of the show, adding another layer to the story. The audience was roaring with laughter, not one person left that theater without smiling ear to ear. Without giving any spoilers, the ending will have you pleasantly surprised (or you might roll your eyes). Killed To Death is a humorous murder mystery that adults and kids alike can enjoy. Catch the show at the Edmonton Fringe Festival August 15 - 24th 2025 at the Walterdale Theater.
