Mathew's Big Broadway Bash

Ever wondered what it takes to throw a Broadway-themed cabaret on a Fringe Festival budget? Spoiler alert: it’s not all glitter, disco balls, & flying chandeliers. But what we do have is heart, talent, and a whole lot of Broadway magic. This isn’t just a show—it’s a high-energy, feel-good love letter to the musicals we love.

Mathew's Big Broadway Bash was inviting, fun, friendly, and unique from start to finish. Mathew's vocals are amazing, with control and power like what you'd hear on a Broadway stage. Throughout the show is sections of audience participation, from sing-a-longs to bringing people on stage, which makes the performance personable and Mathew seem more like a friend singing for you. The show was able to stay fresh and interesting with Mathew telling stories and jokes between numbers, which kept me engaged the whole way through. This show is a lovely and friendly love letter to musical theatre sung by a great vocalist and charming performer.

Holy Trinity has a history of featuring singers who have found their songbook and love singing from it. Mathew is a case in point. From Annie to ABBA he shares his passion and drags us along. In cabaret, he says, there is no fourth wall. This is me you're getting. Well, Mathew and a few chaming and talented guests. You will leave this show will your cheeks hurting because you've been grinning for almost an hour. So much fun.

This was a Broadway musical review and the singer, Mathew, is from Toronto. I enjoyed his songs. There were crowd sing-a-longs and I enjoyed belting out the familiar music with reckless abandon. There was a dancer at one point too. It’s was a sweet little low-budget show.

Mathew Mac Lean’s love for Broadway oozes off the stage in this hour long tribute to the shows that shaped us. He infuses the show with so much wit, humor, and care. Clearly believing in creating a space where everyone is welcome, Mathew sings barefoot as he encourages people to sing, dance, or interact with the show in whatever way is most comfortable for them. He also seeks to uplift other artists as he brings in a new guest for each performance and tries to shout-out any other artists that come to the show. It is a very interactive show as you receive sing-along lyrics and are asked for adlib words at the beginning of the show, which I was not prepared for as it does not mention audience participation in the description (I did enjoy it though).

I used a tangle and started off using Loop quiet earplugs, but took them out to sing more comfortably. It is a very loud show (the floors vibrate with all the noise) and the lights are both too bright and not bright enough. Let me explain: I found the lights too bright but during the sing-along songs multiple people had to use their phone flashlights to see the paper so they could sing-along. Unrelated to the show itself, the chairs in the basement of Holy Trinity are very uncomfortable and it is impossible to put your feet up in an attempt to avoid the vibrations from the sound. I did get a headache because of the sound and lights, but it was worth it as I had a great time singing my little heart out. Mathew’s Big Broadway Bash truly feels like a community, rather than just a show, so if you like musical theatre I can’t recommend it enough (just maybe don’t take the earplugs out like I did). It would be a 5 star, but headache!

Mathew’s Big Broadway Bash is an absolute Fringe gem—a joyful, interactive celebration of musical theatre led by Mathew Mac Lean, whose powerhouse vocals deserve a Broadway stage. With a voice that soars, charms, and stirs the soul, Mac Lean brings audiences together through sing-alongs, heartfelt storytelling, and laugh-out-loud moments. It's the kind of show where strangers become a community, all swept up in the magic of Broadway tunes. How this talent hasn’t been snapped up by Broadway yet is a mystery—but while he’s still here, don’t miss your chance to witness this unforgettable performance.
