Pair of Guys Lost: A New Musical

A queer, irreverent, sinfully original satirical biblical musical comedy with new original music and book by local playwright, David Son. Angels spill tea, snakes offer wisdom, and a Trump-like administration struggles to control Eden, where truth and knowledge are elusive. Wickedly funny, catchy and heartfelt.

Laughed So Hard I Cried

This show was way cuter than it had any right to be! The script was hilarious and had a clever message, the music was really catchy, and the whole cast was very strong. But all that aside the two leads had Heartstopper-level chemistry. My queer heart laughed, cried, and cheered from start to finish.

Not My Cup of Tea

Overall, I'd prefer this show with 100% less Trump.

The show, with the premise of a queer take on a biblical creation story, within an incompetent administration of Eden is interesting and something I'd like to see.

What I didn't love was the broad featuring of actual Trump in this musical. Orange face, hair, little hands, "huge", the whole nine yards. At this point, the Trump jokes that can be made, have been made. It feels like stale, retreaded ground.

There's a lot of good to like about the rest of the show. A couple of the numbers are bangers that got stuck in my head, there's a lot of throwaway bits and lines that are very funny. It's a clever script.

But ultimately, the focus on satirizing the sitting president directly ends up making the whole thing feel quite stale.

A Pair of Guys Lost: A New Musical Fringe Review, by Andrea Noga (AYTC).

Are you a Canadian who’s tired of hearing about American politics? I get it. However, before you swear it off completely, consider if this show might be right for you.

Pair of Guys Lost is a new musical by local theatre artist David Son (Book, music, lyrics, director, choreographer, “Steve”). The show follows “Adam”, the first man (or is he?) on Earth and the #1 worshipper of God, who happens to resemble a certain American president. However, everything begins to change when the angels send Adam a partner to live with on Earth and together they begin to unravel the lies of the so-called “paradise” they live in. It is a both a political statement and an exciting, funny, updated version of the creation story.

Pair of Guys Lost offers a large (for Fringe) ensemble cast, and features some of the strongest vocals I’ve heard at Fringe 2025, especially from cast member Nicole Gaskell. Gaskell portrays Kelly-Anne, (where have I heard that name before?) the woman-in-waiting to God– however, we soon realize that Kelly-Anne is really the one pulling all the strings. Gaskell’s Kelly-Anne is sickeningly evil, and her belty villain song is the standout number of the show. The trio of gossipy angels (Sika Clarke, Erin McLean, and Kaitlyn Power) also deliver impressive harmonies and strong characterization.

The original score of Pair of Guys Lost offers something exciting for Fringe, with techno beats that make you count down the days until a cast recording releases. While the music spans a few genres in a way that starts to feel disjointed, there are some solid feats of composition, especially for the slower numbers. The original script also offers interesting viewpoints and political commentary, if not as much as I expected. When I saw the character of God was clearly inspired by President Donald Trump, I expected politics to take center stage in the musical. While they still feature prominently, the show critiques religion mainly and the Trump-like character only appears a few times. Within the premise, I do believe there were more opportunities to integrate direct political commentary and avoid having the addition of American politics feel like a gimmick. Still, the show has a clear perspective and sticks to it throughout.

John Milton wrote “All is not lost, the unconquerable will, and study of revenge, immortal hate, and the courage never to submit or yield.” in Paradise Lost. Pair of Guys Lost has a similar message. Even in the face of oppressive politics and pressure to succumb, there is always the option to follow what you believe is right. This message may be delivered through vogueing and various wig changes, but it is delivered nonetheless. Pair of Guys Lost is a new musical that truly feels innovative and exciting, and that means a lot.

My favourite show I've seen so far, I was very impressed with this musical. I empathize with the reviewer who discussed the sound issues. I saw it on the first night and was near the front, but there were some mic issues. Hopefully they have been able to troubleshoot this because the cast is too good to not be heard. The singing, dancing, and acting were all on point. The songs were all absolute bangers, and the political and religious critique was done well. The impressions- Trump and, randomly, Moira Rose- were spot on. Totally hilarious but also features a really sweet love story. I laughed and cried. Can't recommend it enough and I wish the cast every success.

There were parts of this show that were so funny and well done. The cast was very talented. The overall idea was entertaining. However, a couple of things really dragged the experience down. The sightlines in the show are terrible - the first 4 rows need to be cut down to 1. Its too many flat rows before it starts scaling up. Mic issues were a big one. They were intermittently off and then on and then off again. But the biggest thing was that the music was too loud to hear the actual singing. We missed every single song because we only heard the music. So any plot points that were being given to us or they were trying to hit home? We didn't hear it sadly. And they had beautiful voices, so that is a shame. If you go, sit in the front row so that you can see and hear.

Hilarious show with a heartfelt message. Pacing of the show was perfect, songs were all a hit, all the characters were well developed. This is what the Fringe is all about! Will see again!

Laughed So Hard I Cried

The title should explain itself – a satire about the Garden of Eden, creation of the first humans, Adam & Steve, and the consequences of an all-powerful being on an ego trip! There were some very pertinent reflections on the world as it is today that were quite thought-provoking. A hilarious reflection on free will, Pair of Guys Lost is a wild ride!
