Witches in the Closet

There's a bounty of potential with Witches in the Closet, and I hope it gets another chance to shine soon.

With two incredibly talented singers, this is a new musical about two sapphic young women accused of witchcraft. Cute and simple choreography accompany simple (but effective) lighting and set design. The writing felt a bit clunky at times (lyrics included) and could do with a little polishing. I chalk the longer-than-needed scene transitions up to a completion of the song's instrumentals that simply took too much time when the actors were ready to move on. Trim some of the excess music and keep the pace up, instead.

The ending is in need of closure, doubling back to my earlier point of polishing up the writing. There's a lot of emotional depth only touched on and not fully explored in this new musical. Consider allowing the weight of the character's experience to sacrifice some of the pretty vocals and music.

All in all, a decent show with plenty of room to grow.

When audible over the accompanying music, it was easy to tell how talented they both are as singers, however, their lack of mics made it quite challenging to hear them outside of fron-of-stage solos. The premise has legs but in its current state, there isn't enough exposition or character development to make us care about the characters/ their outcomes. With characters' outcomes in mind, I was genuinely shocked when the lights came on and the actresses signalled that the play was over because there was no resolution or closure, leaving us confused and wondering if something had happened that had made them end the play early. With more time and direction, however, it has the potential to be a great show.

A charming, short, non-linear story that had me both grinning and crying. The lighting added to the atmosphere, the music was delightful, and I think the transitions were just enough to have me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. Beautiful singing and well thought characters. Would love to see more of these two!

while i applaud the effort that went into this show (as it does all the fringe shows), this one didn’t do it for me. the characters did not feel fully developed as they could have been; the set/costume changes took a large chunk out of the runtime, leaving us in the dark for around 2 minutes each time. i also felt the ending was incredibly abrupt, and not in an inventive way. i enjoy the idea of this story, but i wish the execution could have been more polished.

Witches in the closet is a heartbreaking story that explores queerness, femininity, and conformity through a historical lens. Taking place in the era of witch trials, this show follows two girls who get prosecuted for witchcraft after their not-so platonic relationship is discovered. Through the show, we get to know the two girls and their relationship. The two actors portray this beautifully, with great chemistry between them. As the show switches between flashbacks, the actors create noticeable contrast between the girls at different ages. The audience falls in love with the characters through the actors' heartwarming depiction of girlhood and childhood friendship, which only enhances the tragedy of what the characters deal with as they grow older. The music through the show is great, full of harmonies and overlapping melodies that emphasize to the tension of the situation and the connection between the two girls. The actors perform the music very well, both having amazing voices that blend beautifully. This show is charming and thought-provoking, exploring themes that apply not just to a historical context, but to our world today.

This is a heart warming and very special story. The storytelling is compelling and the music, songwriting and vocals are incredible. I laughed, and shed a few tears. I highly recommend Witches in the Closet!

The premise was really good. The singing, great. But the transitions were soooooooo long. They didn't do a good job of filling in those gaps. And it was already a short play, i feel like it needs more polishing
