Accidentally Heterosexual
There are some live performances that you get to experience as an audience member that leave a mark on you - like the feeling of a tender close hug or a balm to your healing heart. Accidentally Heterosexual - a transgender standup special about love by Kay is one of them.
Kay’s presence on stage, the way she engages with the audience, feels like she’s your top confidante - your go-to best friend, that lovely family member you share family gossip together with, a trusted therapist you’ve been going to who’s seen you at your worst (like think snotty-bawling-crying-boohoo-hiccup kind of worst). There is so much kindness, intelligence and openness to her delivery and how she shares her story.
There is also so! Much! Humour! Kay is hilarious!!!!! The amount of smiles that I couldn’t help but smile, or giggles that would bubble from my belly, or full on ugly, barking laughter that would burst from me were endless. Effortlessly and inventively, Kay segues from joke to joke, landing punch line after punch line while still leaving you room to catch your breath, only before catching you in delightful surprise with another punch line. The cycle of smiles, giggles, and laughter then starts again and again - it’s a merry-go-round of charm, wit and joy. So, so, so much joy.
With all this being said, I think Accidentally Hetersexual is an active love letter for love, for connection, and for being human. It’s an invitation to reflect on who you truly are at this moment, to question what roles you’re a part of in your relationships, and to deep dive into what else and what more could be possible for you with honesty, hope and courage.
I think Accidentally Heterosexual is a gift. What Kay has to say might be the words you’ve been needing to hear but couldn’t articulate. It’s words that speak of a future that is accepting and embracing of everyone’s individual authenticity. Words have power, and in my humble opinion, Kay’s have the power to change you for the better, to shift something into alignment for you.
I think Accidentally Heterosexual might be one of the most important pieces of live performance I’ve seen. Right now though, I know it’s my favourite.
PS - If you’re thinking “Oh this show might not be for me,” I want to emphatically and passionately say that yes. Yes, it is. Go see it.
Accidentally Heterosexual is an honest, endearing, vulnerable, funny, classy and loveable account. Thank you, Kay, for an excellent show!
I’m so happy I got into this sold out show, and even happier to see a beautiful trans woman living & loving! No matter your gender or sexuality, there’s something relatable & hilarious for all. Thank you, Kay! 😍
This is a deeply personal show about love, relationships, and the pretending we all do to conform to our genders. A reminder that there is no right or wrong way to exist in a relationship as long as there is love, respect and support for each other. This show made me tear up and then imminent breakout laughing at multiple points. Ky has a gift for adding humor to any topics she talks about.
Loved this show!! It's a reflective and hilarious show on becoming who you are while falling in love--and what your family might have to do with it. Oh yeah, while navigating baffling, limiting gender norms.
Relatable, vulnerable, moving. Highly recommend!
Kay had me from the moment she began talking to us. I teach genders and sexualities and wish every psychoanalytic student could have been there with me today. Smart, intimate, humorous, and thought provoking. I left with a full heart.
Thank you, Kay!❤️
Kay is a gem of a local comedian & queer artist!! Her standup special at Fringe poked fun at her own accidentally heterosexual T4T relationship but was really about gender roles, living to your feminist values, and letting yourself love & be loved. So many laughs, with so much heart ❤️ Go check her out at Fringe fest or at one of her monthly comedy shows/open mics!!
Lucked into seeing this play while in Vancouver for the week and so happy I was able to. Kay provides such a hilarious yet thoughtful look at gender dynamics, relationships, and love. I came out of it not only having laughed a lot, but also went away pondering new perspectives on gender, sexuality, and feminism. I think that this show will resonate with everyone who sees it in one way or another, and, due to the genuine love that clearly undergirds this piece, will hopefully leave them with the same unanticipated warm fuzzies that it did me.
This play was everything - Kay is hilarious and incredibly thoughtful, crafting a one-woman show that both tugs at the heartstrings and leaves you laughing hysterically at different intervals. She tells a story about love and identity that most everyone can relate to in one way or another, while weaving her sharp sense of wit and humour into a lively commentary on gender roles, sexuality and feminism. I cannot recommend it enough!
First time in my life I’ve laughed and cried at a woman talking about laundry. Kay is East Vancouver’s stand-up comedy queen, and shines in her Fringe debut & first ever hour long special. A beautiful reflection on T4T love, labour, and the pursuit of domesticity. There’s something for all audiences to take away from Kay’s incredible storytelling.
Kay’s title accidentally caught my attention. Heartfelt performance: caring, informative, open book
An elegant, hilarious, and straight (gay) coded comedy show packed with jokes, but also reflections on masculinity, femininity, and gender roles in today’s society. Must watch!!
