The False Tour of False Creek
Listen this is not for everyone, but truly, its for someone, and i think it may have been for me. Listen, im giving 5 stars, not because it was amazing, but in hopes it happens again and thay take this as a signe that thay should work on it. Listen, i felt that this guy was ready for a change. Think about it he was pretending to be a normal guys who runing a business, but the truth is that thare is an actor in that man and he is hoping the Fringe show was his birth on stage, and you know what, but he couldint admit it. Well he knows the truth. I think it was. No random bus driver goes "hay im truly a bus driver first but I'm just filling in for Shakespeare." That's not how it works No he was Shakespeare all along underneath "but like no biggi". Yes Biggi! He was an actor and he knows it. It was a fragile and fun show. This man needs an acting class and a therapist and a agent. Am i an actor or am i a house painter l, if you look at ky bank account you'd say im broke. But not this man
Not what it's advertised to be. Our captain started off by saying he's not an actor and is basically just roped into it because he works for the ferry, and doesn't have anything prepared. Asked if anyone had any questions and basically just did a chill boat ride while chit chatting. No stories.
Given the graphic used to promote this show, I was expecting epic tales of monstrous prehistoric sea creatures doing battle along this seemingly modest and tame inland sea. But the false tales being told were much less ambitious. The central false tale was an aimless story that drew from the time Expo 86 dominated the creek and the news. Disappointing in many ways, although I now wonder whatever became of Expo Ernie.
You never know what you're going to get with this one 🤣 but I was totally disarmed by the false start of our "guide" being pulled out of the office only moments before we began. From there the "two truths and a lie" (or maybe more like one truth and five lies) game began and I was in stitches realizing how gullible I can be. If all else fails you're on a boat in False Creek? How can you go wrong.
I was excited to grab a ticket for this one as I missed out in 2025. Ultimately I really did enjoy my 40ish minutes on the ferry tour, however it was not what I expected at all in terms of the content and style of the storytelling. I think the poster is quite misleading... truly there was nothing to do with monsters or beasts on the tour.
The actor/storyteller/Captain of our ferry did a wonderful job, however it helped a lot to have an engaged group of audience members. I think if you end up with a quiet/shy group then this tour wouldn't work very well.
It's also a weather-dependent experience; fortunately I had my ticket for a beautiful sunny day, but I don't think it would be very fun to do this one on a cold grey day. Props for originality in using a moving vessel and I'll certainly remember this one for a while.
I was quite confused by what this ended up being. I expected something akin to a sightseeing tour with false facts and made-up history, but it was essentially a meandering story about a woman falling in love with Expo Ernie told to us while we happened to be on a boat. There was nothing specific to our being on the boat - the same experience could have been had in any Fringe venue. Our captain was charming and a good storyteller, but he unfortunately ran out of story before we returned to port and had to vamp for the last ten or so minutes. A strange and confusing experience - maybe that was the point?
Oh man, what a missed opportunity this was… The setting, a False Creek ferry ride, is so creative and exciting. The idea of providing false information about False Creek is clever. The story fell completely flat though… There’s a lot of promise in this concept, but I recommend going back to the drawing board and completely rewriting the story.
