A Camper and Campaign By: Syenne Ko

An intriguing beginning: Bobby Wesley marched in with an American flag, marking the start of (a)political - a story filled with hope, relatability, and a sprinkle of humor. Based on real events, this story follows two friends running a campaign in an unwinnable Florida community known for its promiscuity and golf carts.

From nailing comedic scenes to authenticity which resonated with the audience, Wesley’s performance was captivating from start to finish. Along with Wesley’s immersive imagery and expressiveness, this story came to life and took the audience along the emotional roller coaster.

Like the denizens in (a)political we have a choice: vote for the party or for the person.

An Evening of Prestidigitation By: Syenne Ko

Three glowing chandeliers and a box of Bicycle cards illuminated by a single spotlight; this set the stage for Cards on the Table with Byron Martin.

With sleeves rolled up and nothing to hide, Byron Martin was very relaxed throughout the entire performance. However, this casual demeanor did not match the astonishing tricks. From a disappearing deck to finding a certain card, this magician had a deep bag of tricks. This magic left the audience in awe and curious of how the tricks were done. Alas, if you can’t figure it out, just enjoy the extraordinary experience!

Interested in seeing close-up magic? Then enter the whimsical world of Cards on the Table.

Spill the Tea By: Syenne Ko

The tea is piping hot, so pull up a chair and join Three Ladies starring Jana O'Connor, Belinda Cornish and a special guest.

With a box full of the audience’s suggestions, there were juicy topics of conversation for the cast. What was even juicier were the side scenes based on each topic of conversation. These hilarious scenarios, which were completely improvised, had the audience in stitches.

Accompanying this afternoon tea was Paul Morgan Donald, who played live music. From calming to playful, the music transformed the tea party’s ambiance at the right moments.

Make sure to catch this tea while it’s still hot!

Culmination of Humans and Bots By: Syenne Ko

I’ll admit, on August 16, I did not know what to expect going into PLAYS BY BOTS, but wow, was I pleasantly surprised!

This show has a very unique premise: Dramatron - a playwriting AI creates some of the script (kept secret from the cast), and then the cast improvises the rest of the show.

Being completely unrehearsed, I was blown away with how effortlessly the cast embodied their character, while bringing contagious enthusiasm. The audience was laughing from the very beginning of the show.

Though, it was the latter part of the performance where the cast truly shone. The cast took the hilarity to a completely different level by breaking down the fourth wall and even incorporating the audience.

With a completely different show every time, I would definitely see PLAYS BY BOTS again.

THERE'S NO SNOOZING IN THIS ANATOMY CLASS! By: Syenne Ko

With their back turned to the audience and on a squeaking chair, Amica Hunter, the star of Anatomica, entered the stage. This unusual entrance sparked the beginning of this personal and slightly unnerving comedy.

Though this performance has an unsettling premise, Hunter made the audience feel at ease with numerous interactive moments.

Like in most biology classes, I learned many new facts - but Hunter kept me engaged with hilarious analogies and vivid explanations.

So, if you want to learn something new and be amused, look no further; Anatomica: A Comedy About Meat, Bones, & The Skin You're In is at the Edmonton Fringe until August 24.

Horcruxes and Hormones By: Syenne Ko

Calling all witches and wizards! Come fly over and see Voldemort and the Teenage Hogwarts Musical Parody by DarkStage Productions. From the euphonious vocals to intricate choreography, you are in for a treat, or should I say “chocolate frog”!

The hilarious opening number gives no doubt that this performance is a parody. Tastefully sprinkled throughout were comedic timings, enhancing the enjoyment of the audience.

Though, the musical numbers were the true highlight of the show. A standout number was Jayden Leung (Tom Riddle) and Carly Pettitt (Muffin Rows), whose vocals shone along with their chemistry. The ensemble numbers were also a pleasure to behold, from the gorgeous blend of harmonies to detailed dance arrangements.

If you are curious about Tom Riddle’s backstory and like a whodunnit, Voldemort and the Teenage Hogwarts Musical Parody is the perfect show!

Grab Your Shot Glasses and Buckle Up! By Syenne Ko

Imagine - a film class taught by your slightly tipsy friends. Whiskey Flicks Live! is this and more, starring Michael Niederman and Daniel McCoy. Following a theme, Daniel plays unseen movie clips as Michael responds with unscripted commentary. From obscure gems to cult classics, you’ll be in for a surprise every time! Daniel and Michael have a beautiful dynamic: Michael is bursting with energy, while Daniel is affirming and shares fascinating details on the clip. Together, they create a genuine and passionate show! Whiskey Flicks Live! is at the Edmonton Fringe until August 24.

P.S. Yes, there’s whiskey (if you want and are of age)

Surreal Quest By Syenne Ko

Anger, sadness, and joy - The Routine performed by Joylyn Secunda encapsulated all these emotions and more, as a mime seeking the meaning of life. This surreal quest was brought to life by their fluidity and precise movements. Their animated expressions also took the audience along on the emotional adventure. A standout aspect was the mime being themselves and an animal at the same time, as those scenes were filled with palpable tension. It was also a delight to watch the mime match the rhythm of varying music with such grace. That being said, this performance would not be complete without Sebastian, the technician who brought another layer of authenticity. The Routine is perfect for anyone seeking an evocative and abstract journey.

Hilarious Tragedy

Chuckles at every corner and impeccable improvisation - Tragedy or Triumph: An Improvised Shakespearean Epic by the Spontaneous Shakespeare Company is a must-see for any theatre-goer. From the beginning, the audience was instantly engaged, offering suggestions that shaped the show. With the audience's choice between tragedy or triumph, “The Tragedy of Musical Braces” came to life. Seamlessness is a key aspect of improvisation and the cast nailed it! They were able to incorporate the rhythmic language of Shakespeare, while crafting a dramatic story filled with laughter. This cast embodies "creativity at its finest”, so don’t miss them at the Edmonton Fringe from August 15-23!
