Absolutely charming!

When the play was over and we were leaving the theatre, I heard several people comment on how realistic it was. I’m not sure they were referring to the characters themselves, because Evie and Alfie are sweet and somewhat idealized, and their relationship is the kind many of us dream of having as we grow older.

What felt real to me was the development of their relationship: the ups and downs they experienced, the ways they changed as they grew older, and the emotions behind the different events in their lives. The play captured the passage of time beautifully, showing how love can evolve while still remaining deeply recognizable.

The actors were wonderful! Engaging and warm, with great chemistry. They carried us through the characters’ joy, anger, and sadness.

The stage setup was extremely simple: two chairs and a side table. Yet they made such effective use of them, and every moment felt carefully choreographed. The simplicity allowed the performances and the relationship at the heart of the play to shine.

Laughed So Hard I Cried

My favourite 2026 Fringe Show! A glimpse into this funny, endearing couple. I had a good old laugh at parts that were funny without trying to be - just people being people. The play goes through a number of decades and despite little changes in the set or wardrobe these two transport you through all of them. Would recommend!

Another reviewer noted that this play would be a hit with the boomers and Gen x in the crowd. I guess being a Gen x maybe gives me some bias. But I loved this place so much. I am single. Never married. And I could still fully relate and find the stories both touching and funny. The actors really embraced their roles and were able, with their body language to portray their ages throughout time. I loved the sweet, loving humor in this play. The ending, although predictable, was still heartwarming and sad. This play had it all laugh out loud and tears. I would highly recommend. The actors are incredibly talented

See It Again

This is a story about enduring love. I come from British roots, so I identified strongly, but my husband’s German roots did not get in the way of his understanding. For anyone who has been together with their partner a long time, and gone through so many shared moments—both the good and the not-so-good—this story will resonate. This is the first Fringe show I have ever seen that brought me to tears. The performers are perfect in their roles. I want to sit down with a cuppa and a choccy bickie and experience the show again.

Polished and effortless. The cast knows their characters so well we are completely convinced and instantly enamoured. A series of touching vignettes give insight to the big and little moments that make up a relationship over decades. A few unexpected choices and reveals only make it all seem more real. The love between Evie and Alfie feels genuine, and I genuinely loved watching it on stage.

Charming, sweet, poignant 'Evie & Alfie: A Very British Love Story' at The Toronto Fringe is well worth seeing. The story of a couple's relationship over many decades. Two truer characters have never been on stage. GO OUT AND PLAY

The performers are amazing. The story is predictable and while sweetly portrayed, is banal. Go see the show if you want to see good actors on stage who really work well together and their comic sweetness shows through. Skip the show if you're looking for something surprising.

See It Again

This show is an extraordinary celebration of long-term love, commitment, and the quiet ways we continue choosing one another through life's many changes. It is deeply funny, profoundly wise, and incredibly human. It beautifully captures the reality that lasting relationships aren't built on perfection but they're sustained by the willingness to keep showing up, even when it's difficult, forgive quickly, and to continually rediscover one another through each season of life.

The humour is distinctly British, and the production strikes the perfect balance of making it accessible without ever diluting its charm or intelligence. I love how theatre brings us all to laugh together progressively louder as the show goes on. Both actors deliver impeccable performances, with flawless comic timing and remarkable emotional depth. They effortlessly transport the audience through each decade of the Elvie & Alfie’s journey, making every stage of their relationship feel authentic and earned.

I absolutely loved the ending. It brought me to tears as it spoke so truthfully to the depth of commitment in marriage: to be truly seen, deeply known, and completely accepted as we grow and change together. The end holds the sadness of when that all ends and becomes a memory. This is one of those rare productions that doesn't just entertain; it leaves you reflecting on your own life, your own relationships, and the quiet beauty of choosing love again and reflecting on the memories we’ll have in the end.

By turns hilarious and heartwarming, this show charts the course of a couple from first encounter to old age. Two seasoned comic pros Alex Dallas and Jimmy Hogg bring the characters and scenes to vivid life, making for a rich and powerful hour of entertainment. The show will resonate with anyone who has British roots, but anyone in a relationship will relate to this couple’s ups and downs.

My 1st Standing Ovation of #FringeTO '26 went to this deceptively simple story of 2 soulmates' 50+ years together, from 2 performers w/ 50+ years of Fringe experience combined. Kudos to creators Alex Dallas & Jimmy Hogg, & director James Gangl!

A delightful story about love from an era I can only relate to through the stories I remember hearing from my grandparents. I think, if you've got parents or grandparents in their twilight years, or maybe if you are that parent or grandparent, this story will strike a chord with you.

The performances were phenomenal. I've seen some of Jimmy Hogg's stuff before and have fallen in love with his storytelling, but he captured this character in different eras of his life brilliantly. Alex Dallas was also fantastic as Evie, bringing a lot of charm and depth to the role without being overshadowed, as she easily could have been, by the boisterous energy of Hogg.

This show was an absolute HIT with the boomers/gen x in the crowd. I think some jokes were a bit old-fashioned, drawing on some gender stereotypes and ball-and-chain style humor that might not play well to a younger crowd, but there were several jokes that were really hilarious for everyone. The end was abrupt but fairly effective. The creators/actors are obviously talented, charismatic, and funny. It’s a cute gap filler if you have ~50min to kill between shows.

Laughed So Hard I Cried

A heartwarming comedy about a sweet, quintessential elderly British couple, EVIE AND ALFIE: A VERY BRITISH LOVE STORY is a hilarious play you don't want to miss. Starring the Fringe veterans Alex Dallas and Jimmy Hogg and directed by James Gangl, the witty new show perfectly depicts a realistic, loving, and long-lasting relationship in the most entertainingly genuine way: by having them sit on vintage chairs and retell their epic love story. Dallas and Hogg give the show life with their enigmatic performances, captivating the hearts and laughs of their audience.

The play starts off with the couple doing simple elderly-people things; such as birdwatching, reading the newspaper, or freaking out over their neighbour bringing their garbage bin out early. As they reflect on their relationship, they revisiting memories like the first day they met, their casual proposal, and Evie's pregnancy. More dramatic or upsetting moments are explored, but they only add depth and layers to Evie and Alfie's bond. Evie especially, had very powerful moments of what the youth would call "female rage" that displayed her strength and resilience to stay with Alfie even during the hard parts of their relationship.

Dallas (who plays Evie) and Hogg (who plays Alfie) make for an adorable on-stage duo. Their bickering, flirting, and comedic timing are spot-on, making every interaction between the characters feel believable and completely authentic to a real couple. It was fun seeing their different personalities shine through as well, with Evie being more cheeky and collected whilst Alfie is laughably persistent and rambling. The miming work was also genius for the memory story-telling aspects of the show, and their more youthful mannerisms during those moments additionally helped immerse the audience into that time of the couple's life.

One technical detail that captured my attention was the sound of a grandfather clock ticking to signal Evie and Alfie transitioning out of their past memories and into their present day elderly selves. It stood out amongst the very few other sound effects in the show. Other than that, the set was extremely simple with just two chairs but became very effective and versatile when visualizing scenes like Alfie's first time on Evie's motorbike.

EVIE AND ALFIE: A VERY BRITISH LOVE STORY is, overall, a wonderful show that I would highly recommend to any romantic with a funny bone. Truly, I have yet to see another laugh-out-loud comedic play at Fringe quite like this one. Alex Dallas and Jimmy Hogg together on stage is enough of a reason to watch this crowd-puller of a show.

My heart did not know what it was walking into when I sat down for the opening night of Evie and Alfie.

As a long-time fan of both Jimmy Hogg and Alex Dallas, I was prepared to laugh and experience their comedic genius, but what I wasn't expecting was the deep emotional impact of the story and the performances.

Watching Evie and Alfie play out their lives together, from first meeting to first date and all the other firsts in-between that happen when you're growing old together, the duo makes it easy to fall in love with the characters. And as you learn more about them, slip-ups, misdeeds and all, you love them both more for it.

The real winner though is the subtle nuances of both Hogg and Dallas's performances, which add another layer of genuine emotional connection and depth to an already stellar show.

I cannot recommend this show enough. It should be added to your "must-see" list!💛
